The Public Library started the so-called meetings in April Memory Readings where literary texts that evoke our recent historical memory are analysed. Last month it was the turn of the best-seller national Patria by Fernando Aramburu and in May we have four more dates ahead of us with books and authors that are very worthwhile. Tea rooms, working women [2/5], a book of hatless Luisa Carnés tells the story of four exploited workers from a distinguished tea room; The shadow monarch [16/5] by Javier Cercas about an almost anonymous boyfriend - Cercas's great-uncle - who joined Franco's army when the Civil War broke out; The absence is better [30/5] where Edurne Portela portrays the life of a Basque family that lives on the left bank of the Nervión during the hardest years of Etara terrorism; i The long march [13/6] by Rafael Chirbes on post-war Spain and the anti-Franco resistance of the sixties.
