The expulsion of the Moors

Bancaja Foundation. Pl. Tetouan, 23

The Bancaja Foundation closes the year with a small exhibition, more interesting from a historical prism than from an artistic one. That's why much of the room, painted Mediterranean blue, it is occupied by vinyls that explain the paintings. He 1609 Felipe II set in motion the expulsion of the Moors (Muslims forcibly converted to Christianity) of Valencian lands - a third of the population - and soon after he commissioned these paintings of the "gesta". They portrayed the boarding of the "infidels" in the ports of Vinaròs and Dénia; the rebellion of the Moors in the Sierra de Laguar; or the arrival in Oran, where the newcomers were also mistreated by the locals. A sample of confrontations, mort, pain and suicides to reflect on the past and make us aware of the value of tolerance. S.M.
