THE SHIP. University, 2
The approach of this exhibition was as follows: as we cannot exhibit a representative selection of the funds accumulated in 250 years for the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos, let's offer the beginning (the most relevant pieces in the creation of the institution) and the end (the most current works of contemporary artists). That is to say, that we will not see any of the four Goyas in the collection, but a collection of oils, recorded, drawings and terracottas of figures such as Vicente López or José Vergara, founder of the institution together with his brother and other Valencian artists. The aim is to show the attitude of the Academy, more than its background power. It was born in the same room that hosts this exhibition today 14 of February of 1768 - in a context of confrontation between art and craftsmanship - with the approval of the monarch Carlos III, great promoter of neoclassicism in Spain, in those days the avant-garde movement that permeates the first part of the route. The second part is dedicated to the most recent works - some done professionally– academics (in the 18th century there was none) current as Carmen Calvo, Joan Cardells, Rafael Armengol, Henry Mestre, Joaquin Collado, José Aleixandre or José María Yturralde.
