BB.AA MUSEUM. Saint Pius V, 9
The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia dedicates a small exhibition to a master of the early Valencian late Gothic who we have not identified, but whose importance demands a name, that is why it has been named "The Master of Perea". His capital work, he Altarpiece of the three kings, is being restored upstairs and, like the predella of the Centenar de la Ploma, it will go down to public space during the last phase of the restoration so that Valencians can observe the work up close. Meantime, The master of Perea. A Valencian primitive displays the characteristic features of our anonymous artist who, playing with the late-Gothic heritage and the early Renaissance currents, cultivated a very particular iconography: the predilection for female figures, its characterization with the stripe of the bun on one side and the ear of soplillo, the crown with stars, the folds of the clothes well marked, the floor in perspective with counters or carpets of rich brocades, and the inclusion of characters from the Old Testament such as David and Solomon in scenes from the New Testament such as the crucifixion of Christ or the adoration of the kings. The jewel of the show is the Virgin of the Guild of Millers of Valencia, recently bought by the public estates to fatten the Valencian artistic heritage and help to understand how the artists of the area assimilated the novelties of the Italian Renaissance. They did it slowly because in Valencia we were anchored in the Gothic style for a long time, we remember that while in Italy the Renaissance postulates ran like wildfire, here we began to build the Llotja de la Seda in a markedly Gothic style. Valencian Gothic painting in small pot to finish the 2020. AU
