Pepe Gimeno. Dialogues between art and design

UNTIL SUNDAY 19/2
F. BANCAJA. Pl. Tetouan, 23

The developed artistic aspect of the National Design Award Pepe Gimeno gives rise to exhibitions of his work focused on the dichotomy between art and design. Gimeno says that he received very poor artistic training at the old Valencia School of Arts and Crafts., and that led him to learn in a very voluntary and personal way, to an insatiability that made him abandon dominated fields to seek new horizons. That is why in this retrospective that reviews his fifty years of career we find graphic work for posters, brands and covers, sculpture, drawing, paint, and even video art in which what is learned from design and art feeds off each other.. Gimeno understood how important it is for a text to breathe within the page thanks to the work of Piet Mondrian, where emptiness is as important as shape or color. We are talking about a totem of Valencian design that has created such essential signs of identity as the tourist palm tree of the Generalitat Valenciana and the logo of the EMT. (or that of the Bancaja Foundation itself), or the FF Pepe typography inspired by one by Andy Warhol, model in turn of his sculptures made of scrap wire. Pepe says that typography is the essence of graphic design and, as such, stars in many of his projects, like the one dedicated to post-truth that we saw recently at the Chirivella Soriano Foundation. Now he has returned to figuration in his plastic work and we do not know what will be next., but we are sure that it will surprise you because, while design demands success, art demands experimentation and daring.
