A medium size painting, dated in 1984, represents the beginning and end of a stage: the circle that closes. In that canvas in which the leaves of a loquat tree are represented we can find, well, a good part of the keys to the painting of Sebastián Nicolau (1956) in these last three and a half decades. The games of light and shadow, the folds, the austere chromaticism: all of it, eventually, will have jumped from painting to other media: the installation, the photograph, the drawing (now with another role). Thus, our artist has been questioning the limits of painting or its very idea. Land, the territory to which Sebastián Nicolau alludes, It is not just a transcript of the physical territory that it inhabits.. Even though it is, It is everything that occupies and worries this veteran author who recently published an unusual book.: Mercury between the fingers (2018), memory count, absences and other anecdotes complemented with images of some peculiar vanity. The leaves of the loquat tree, epitome of the poetics of Sebastián Nicolau, open and close this magnificent exhibition. Don't miss it. Rafa Martínez
