SMALL MASTER

Fine Arts Museum. Saint Pius V, 9

Engraving is a genre with little press despite having been an indispensable tool for the dissemination and learning of art.. The engravings that we can see in the Museum of Fine Arts belong to a group of Nuremberg masters, heirs of Albrecht Dürer, who between the end of the 15th and 16th centuries (golden age of engraving in Germany and the world in general) They specialized in small format prints -some, authentic miniatures – of religious and mythological themes, colloquial, ornamental and even erotic or political criticism. One of the reasons they were so small is that they could be hidden in missals from inquisitorial eyes.. An engraving is made by carving lines on copper with a burin., inking it and finally transferring the image to paper. It is very easy for a stain to appear when the lines of many characters with their details and symbolism accumulate in a minimum space., as in the works of Albrecht Altdorfer. That's why these miniatures are a pure display of technical skill.. They are also extremely delicate (They have an average of 500 years old), For conservation reasons, they must be quarantined for four years between exhibitions.. You have to take advantage of the opportunity. S.M.
