BANCAJA FOUNDATION. Pl. Tetouan, 23
The Bancaja Foundation is hosting these days the first monographic exhibition held in Valencia around the work of the painter from Córdoba Julio Romero de Torres (1874-1930). This is a thesis sample that has the scientific endorsement of the art historian Francisco Javier Pérez Rojas.. In its preparation, The curator has avoided the usual topics to construct a new story in line with the latest published studies and the most recent historiographic currents., like gender. So, Romero de Torres' status as an illustrated painter stands out, man close to the Generation of 98 who frequented the Madrid gathering at the Café de Levante. But also its popularity, as well as the signs of enthusiasm and rejection, that he shared with Joaquín Sorolla. Influenced by the symbolism of Puvis de Chavannes, Romero de Torres will be situated between modernity (sacralizes the profane while anticipating magical realism) and a return to classicism what practice, especially in the formal aspect, from 1907. Writers like Cansinos Assens, Pío Baroja or Valle-Inclán noticed his enigmatic paintings. An unbeatable opportunity. Rafa Martínez
