Cucurucucú

UNTIL MONDAY 5/6
FACULTY OF BEAUTIFUL ARTS (UPV). Way of Vera, s/n

Since presiding over the prestigious Magnum agency—she is the first Spanish woman to do so—the name of Cristina Middel sounds with an unusual strength in the Valencian cultural orb. You can see his exhibition until June Etc! to the Center del Carmen (p. 20) and in December of 2022 he received the Sant Carles Medal from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Polytechnic University of Valencia where he was a student. For the occasion, Alicante has condensed its gratitude in this Cucurucucú where he explores different ways of consuming violence while traveling in Mexico, country with which it has strong connections. He has deployed one collage of photographs from the archive of the Mexican newspaper of events Alert and has reinterpreted the images, violent and disruptive, many times with a touch of comedy, in drawings that contain phrases from the country's traditional folk music to reflect on violence, the way it is represented and the limits of explicit violence in published photography. Some bottles of alcohol accompany that “I want to see what your oblivion tastes like” sung by an alcoholic with Chavela Vargas and the portrait of a home with the whole morat il·lustra the “what pretty eyes you have under those two eyebrows” from the song “Malagueña salerosa”. The toxic love that permeates many Mexican songs that is projected in the background of the room also appears recurrently (“I have come to look for her because she is mine.”) because violence is also love misunderstood.
