Cristina Middel. Etc!

UNTIL SUNDAY 18/6
CARME CENTER. Museum, 2

The Alicante Cristina Middel presides since 2022 the prestigious Magnum agency and is a National Photography Award 2014, gallons that, starting, invite you to visit their Etc! at the Center del Carmen. He became internationally known with the photobook Afronauts (2012) about the real story of the first space program launched by Zambia in 1964 who intended to send twelve astronauts and ten cats to the moon. These snapshots and many others full of irony and humor can be seen in the first part of the exhibition, mixed haphazardly in patchworks that cover an entire wall or are deployed in an L shape on the floor and vertically. The second area is dedicated to your project Gentleman’s club where merges the artistic and the documentary to offer a very different look at prostitution: the target is not on the prostitutes, if not in the men willing to pay for them. The woman from Alicante has portrayed men in dark rooms who pay for sex in the largest prostitution centers in the world.: Bangkok, vegas, Lagos, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, Havana… They are men who have agreed to participate in the project in exchange for money (note the irony), of whom we know their marital status, your age, your profession, your nationality, How much money do they pay for “a service”, how they began to frequent prostitutes, and their motivations, confessed in first person: the pleasure, not wanting ties, escape from loneliness or routine, the fear of rejection… Some even say that sex is a human right, or that there are no rapes in Amsterdam because there is prostitution. We tell you aseptic, like Middel does, that presents these men to us in writing in the most neutral way possible to leave the judgment to us, the spectators. And a very nineties cinematic twist is reserved for the end that makes you smile half. S.M.
