These confinement days you can also watch online Faust, a production of the Valencian Institute of Culture (IVC) premiered at 2018 at the Rialto Theater directed by Jaume Policarpo, from Bambalina Theatre. The play won the Valencian Performing Arts Award 2019 to Best Scenography and Best Lighting Design. The premise of the piece has the seal of the multi-award winning Valencian company: puppets manipulated with the Japanese technique bunraku (the manipulator and the puppet coexist on stage, making it more complex to distinguish the identity of one and the other) and the adaptation of great classics of universal literature such as Hamlet(2019), The Celestina (2018), Quixote (1991) or what now concerns us, this Faust of Goethe that has become a fundamental myth of Western culture. The central theme is the dissatisfaction of contemporary man. Seeking the cure to his grief, Faust will offer his soul to the devil in exchange for enjoying all the extreme pleasures in life: joc, alcohol, women, youth… But, too late, he will realize that worldly pleasures are not necessarily with happiness and that what he will find is not perpetual peace, but suffocating anxiety. Faust will pursue pleasure, but all he will leave as a legacy will be a dunghill of dissatisfaction. S.M.
