Dead in the Valencian almond

In a European context of agrarian crisis and climate emergency, there is no possible reasonable explanation that allows the mass export of food from the other side of the world that can be harvested in fields a few kilometers away. The flagrant case of the big Valencian nougat entrepreneurs, with Protected Geographical Indication (IGP), it is a recent and paradigmatic case of management against the Valencian environment and agriculture. October of 2023 the IGP Xixona and Torró of Alicante modified the terms and conditions to be able to use almonds from anywhere in the world. We therefore find ourselves in the paradox of a product with PGI that may not contain any ingredient from the geographical area to which it is circumscribed. The ruinous prices for Valencian farmers and the possible risks to people's health do not matter, as demonstrated this April with almonds imported from the United States containing carcinogenic substances intercepted by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Union.
