Sorolla again at the Bancaja Foundation. But don't snort! The excuse to bring it back seems justified. The Sorolla that they present to us does not come surrounded by light and color, is centered on the line of his drawings, sometimes preparatory to great works, others pure entertainment, memories of family scenes or an end in itself. The sketches are clear proof that the freshness of Sorolla's paintings is not born solely from spontaneity., of pure genius, but of study and conscientious preparation. A good example is a charcoal drawing (never before exposed) that advanced a painting that was never realized, Drawing for a hunting portrait of Alfonso XIII, with the monarch hunting in the countryside. The special circumstances of the assignment, together with the fact that Sorolla was in favor of painting the portraits quickly so that the model would not get tired, made the preparatory drawings exhibited in the exhibition essential Sorolla. Restless cartoonist. Discover the most intimate facet of the Valencian painter in everyday family scenes in which his wife Clotilde and his children appear sewing, studying or playing; but also the freer and more experimental side, artistically speaking, in drawings of Parisian cafes and New York gouaches with very daring perspectives and daring frames. “In the midst of worldly noise,” said Sorolla, “art must be found.”, and he did it whenever he could with his notebooks on his back., willing to give free rein to his natural impulse to draw at any time. Sorolla may be being overexploited, but as would only be done with a true master of color... and, Yeah, also from the line. AU
