Sorolla through the light

UNTIL SUNDAY 18/2
F. BANCAJA. Pl. Tetouan, 23

Arrives from the Royal Palace of Madrid, reformulated, this Sorolla through the light which is sold as an exhibition with work by Joaquín Sorolla that has rarely been seen in his native land and with two additives that aim to open the range of audiences. The first is a sensory room in which the works of the Valencian master are projected on canvases large format surrounds with background music played to fuel emotions. The second is a virtual reality tour that takes you on a walk along the beach and to the studio where Sorolla paints a self-portrait. Regarding the physical work, five of the 45 paintings on display at the Bancaja Foundation—gardens, portraits, the beach, the sea…— they had never seen each other in Valencia. In them you can see how Sorolla managed to represent light like no one else with an opaque material like oil., his mastery in capturing light changes and the transformative power of light wherever it hits. As an example, Portrait of Mrs. Artal, an outdoor portrait that captures the psychology of the sitter and a ray of light that passes through the leaves to subtly illuminate the shirt sleeve. O Swimmers, Javea (1905), where Sorolla represents the lights and reflections of the sea in a daring way; o after bath. The pink robe (1916), that captures with strokes of genius the lighting atmosphere behind a reed screen. S.M.
