The cave of Lascaux. A virtual trip to the past

UNDER MARK OF 2026
M. Prehistory. Corona, 36

The Museum of Prehistory of Valencia will turn one hundred years old on 2027 and it seems that it is already starting to celebrate with this immersive experience that lets us be inside the wonderful Lascaux Cave, the Sistine Chapel (one more) of Paleolithic art. Discovered in the French Dordogne on 1940, was a turning point in the knowledge of the origins of art and humanity during the Upper Paleolithic, 17.000 years ago. Fifteen years after opening to the public (1948), the French government had to ban visitors from entering when they realized that the carbon dioxide they were breathing was transforming the atmosphere inside the cave and, therefore, endangering the paintings. The cave could only be visited for fifteen years, therefore, this virtual reality exhibition that has been touring for thirteen years 18 cities around the world (Chicago, Tokyo, Montreal, Naples…) it's the only way to be there. With the glasses on you can enter an impenetrable cave and sense how impressive the original must have been. Surrounded by horses, oxen and deer (with colors assigned according to the species), in a row and face down, taking advantage of the natural relief of the cave to project a sense of three-dimensionality. You will also find geometric and abstract signs, i, in the scene of the well, five meters deep, the only human figure in the whole cave, within the only narrative scene. Look at your hands. They are those of one A wise man of the time, and with them, you too will be able to paint on the virtual walls of one of the most spectacular examples of Paleolithic rock art, UNESCO World Heritage since 1979.
