José Vergara Gimeno (1726-1799)

UNTIL SUNDAY 6/9
M. CITY. Pl. archbishop, 3

Printing was an effective means of transmitting ideas (and religious fervor) among an eminently illiterate population, but at the same time it could be a true work of art. See here those of Master Durero. José Vergara Gimeno also devoted a lot of effort to this technique, that is why it appears well represented in the final part of this sample, where it is displayed Adoration of the Magi for the first time after being gone for a while. The National Police recovered it last year 2021. Valencian painting of the 18th century does not have much appeal and few will hear the name of José Vergara Gimeno, that's why the City Museum's bet makes perfect sense. Specialized in emotional and technically rigorous religious painting, straddling the dynamism of the late baroque and the neoclassical serenity, Vergara was one of the promoters of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Charles. It's time to find out! AU
