Carmina Burana is a "stage cantata", that name was given to it by its author, Carl Orff, when he composed it between 1935 i 1936. The nomenclature is a contradiction because the cantata is a work for instruments and singers that, unlike opera, it doesn't tell a story, nor is it designed for a stage with actors and scenography. Carmina Burana it is part of a trilogy made from three hundred medieval poems written in different languages (medieval latin, mainly). starting from them, Orff composed 24 songs arranged so that they could be performed on a stage, though, at present, they are usually performed in concert version. These poems emphasize the pleasure of living and carnal love, under a critical and satirical look at the social and church organizations of the time. Fifteen years ago The Fura dels Baus tours all over the world representing this magnum opus as the composer left written that it had to be done: with hearts, orchestra and "magical images", that La Fura projects onto a ten meter diameter cylinder that surrounds the orchestra. They have a symphonic and musical version, which will be the one they will represent in February at the Olympia. Special effects (even, fragrances), live music, fifty artists on stage and the singers flying in cranes or submerged in water, wine and fire to make this piece a true delirium for the senses.
