PALAU OF MUSIC GARDENS. Passeig of the Alberada, 30
Times of crisis, pandemic times (real and virtual), outbreak times, restless times. Who knows what the future will bring. In the immediate present, however, The Film Library continues at the foot of the canyon to offer us a new poster of its already traditional summer program in the Turia Gardens, next to the Palau de la Música. A varied selection of movies to escape from, even for a few hours, of the overwhelming summer heat and so much uncertainty.
This year's program is divided, as usual, in two groups of proposals. The first of them gives us the opportunity to see some of the recent titles that have been awarded at the most prestigious festivals or by the different audiovisual academies.. The second, and under the generic title of Summer was sexy!, offers us a selection of works that have summer as a landscape or epicenter of dramas and conflicts framed in all types of aesthetic or formal proposals.. Among the news, It is worth highlighting the inclusion of some short films in the programming. The short also exists, long live the short!

In this second program we highlight the tape of 1930 directed by Robert Siodmak, People on Sunday [3-4/8], beautiful and accurate silent portrait of pre-World War II Berlin society. A film in which the person responsible for classics like The killers, alongside a very young Willy Wilder in the script, I wanted to make the viewer reflect on a question today, like then, necessary: the division of time according to work days. Here, a group of friends organizes a weekend in the countryside, next to a lake, where, away from everyday responsibilities and the hustle and bustle of the city, They will give free rein to their personalities, desires and, very especially, to his sexuality. These elements are shared with the short film Ash juice [3-4/8], film that accompanies the previous one in the same session and in which the young Catalan director Irene Moray also makes use of natural spaces to show her characters, in this case a group of contemporary young people, and confront them with their individual needs and concerns and the search for their own identity.

Along with these two works we can see three other titles that enjoy, as common denominator, that vacation space that will serve as a background or premise for all types of plots and proposals. Commemorating the centenary of the birth of Éric Rohmer, The Film Library offers us, again on the big screen, Pauline on the beach [10-11/8], third installment of the Comedies and Proverbs series in which Rohmer, true to his style, shows us a group of characters who move to the beaches of Normandy and, especially, to a young fifteen-year-old, the Pauline that gives the film its title, who faces the disrupted world of adults while exploring new vital and sentimental paths. This tape will be followed Good morning sadness [18 y 20/8] by Otto Preminguer with magnificent Jean Seberg, David Niven y Deborah Kerr, and the already romantic classic of the 80, Dirty dancing [25 y 27/8] by Emile Ardolino, with Patrick Swayze at the top of his career.
Among the most contemporary and award-winning cinema, we find titles like pain and gloria [31/7-2/8], latest work by Pedro Almodóvar from La Mancha, Call me by your name [6-7/8] by Luca Guadagnino, live twice [8-9/8] by María Ripoll, The favorite [13-14/8] by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, the Valencian production that won a Goya for best animated film Buñuel and the turtle labyrinth [21-22/8] by Salvador Simó, Calm waters [23-24/8] de Naomi Kawase, production that did not enjoy a commercial release in our community, or the great commercial success of the season within auteur cinema and winner of an Oscar for best film, Parasites [28-30/8] by Korean Bong Joon-ho.

In addition to these titles, it is worth highlighting two special sessions. In the first of them, Saturday 15/8 We will enjoy a double program in which we will be able to see the short film golden legend [15-16/8], film co-directed by the Basque director Ion De Sosa together with the director of Elx, Chema García Ibarra, where, with his usual humorous and traditional style, They tell us a particular story set in a municipal swimming pool. Along with the short, we can see the tape again The innocence [15-16/8] by the Valencian Lucía Alemany, particular approach to the youth of the generation born in the 80 and the summers in an inland town. Besides, on Monday 17/8 we will be able to see the feature film in an exclusive premiere The rose wedding, de Iciar Bollain. The tape, starring Candela Peña, Sergi López, Nathalie Poza, Paula Usero and Ramón Barea, tells the story of Rosa, a woman who, to the 45 years, She discovers that she has always lived for others and decides to leave everything to find herself. This session will be attended, to present the film, the director herself and part of the team. GERARDO LEON
