F. CHIRIVELLA SORIANO. Valeriola, 13
World Press Photo, The most prestigious photojournalism exhibition in the world, returns to Valencia to show the public some of the most representative news events and social phenomena of today. The Chirivella Soriano Foundation and Doctornopo organize this sixth edition of the shows in the city with the most relevant events of 2016 in about 150 images (individual or collected in graphic reports) in which the situation of refugees and forced displacement continues to predominate throughout the planet. Like that of the Madrid reporter Santi Palacios – second prize in the General News category –, which portrays two Nigerian brothers, of 11 y 10 years, on the way to Italy on a boat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. The focus has changed a little, from refugees to wars that create refugees, like those of Ukraine or Syria. Another of the star themes is that of man against nature. (like the turtle caught in a net by the canary Francis Pérez or the monarch butterflies by Jaime Rojo), however, the winning photograph follows another line: A murder in Türkiye, by Turkish photojournalist Burhan Ozbilici, reflects with perfect framing the murder of the Russian ambassador in Türkiye, Andrey Karlov, shot dead by an off-duty Turkish police officer during the opening of an exhibition at an art gallery in Ankara. This exhibition is a trip around the world, from Brazil to the Philippines passing through Cuba and Sudan, about the rescue of shipwrecked refugees, protests against police violence in Baton Rouge, the insulting and jokey superiority of Usain Bolt in a race 100 metros, or overcrowding in Manila prisons. One of the exhibitions that attracts the most visitors every year in Valencia (more of 8.000 last year). Interesting and very hard, as usual. AU
