The epic sea

UNTIL SUNDAY 13/9
THE ETHNO. Corona, 36

It has been a long time since the Valencian Country turned its back on fishing to embrace tourism, and few know that, in the small fishing village that used to be Benidorm, lived some of the world's greatest experts in the art of the trap. Those who know about the subject say that the expertise of the Benidorm captains in tuna hunting was famous and that their services were requested in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Sicily. The almadrava is a technique from the time of the Phoenicians (maybe earlier) which is still used in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of placing a labyrinth of hollow nets that capture the tunas taking advantage of their migration from the Atlantic. The divers and one of them ended up getting involved in this task, Jesus Navarro, professional scuba diver and photography enthusiast—a pioneer of underwater photography—, documents the know-how of the Alicante sailors in 135 images that make up The epic sea: the almadravers of Benidorm in the photographs of Jesús Navarro, an exposure marked by the sun and saltpeter. A human story, labor and social starring the busses, the last captains and their crews, about the art of fishing the tonyina. AU
