UNTIL SUNDAY 7/6
F. BANCAJA. Pl. Tetouan, 23
The great canvases of Torrentí Calo Carratala they earn a lot in person. They evoke grandiose landscapes that deserve high-altitude formats to capture the ice and serene horizons of northern Europe, and the exuberant nature of the Amazon jungle. Travel is always a source of inspiration. In his escapades in Norway, Peru or Tanzania take photos and capture sketches, which can perfectly be left parked for a year to let the memory deposit settle. After a while, these materials will serve to awaken the sensations of those landscapes in the studio. It will not paint specific places, but felt spaces, invented, but so real that they evoke the feeling of having been there. Heir to the landscape tradition, grower of a limited color palette, in oils and watercolors that he prepares himself, Carratalá is not a landscape painter, but of the footprints they leave in their gaze. The human figure began to take a place in the Amazon series, but always in a dependent plan, as a resource to measure the scale of nature. It takes a lifetime to learn how to synthesize a baobab with the sanguina technique or an entire black forest in Brazil with free rats, quick and forceful pencil on paper. Pur talent, Valencian in this case, that Fundació Bancaja wants to recognize with Every place is provisional. The Impressionists who painted in plein air they knew, and Carratalá too. S.M.
