What do airplane turbulence and my latte have in common??

Whenever we hear the term 'turbulence' we associate it with that uncomfortable moment on airplanes when everything starts to move.. But what really is turbulence?? It is a phenomenon that constantly surrounds us and not only in the air. Leonardo Da Vinci already wondered why fluids moved in such strange and complex ways and, hoy, 500 years later, We still don't fully understand this phenomenon!! This chaotic movement that we experience on airplanes is called “turbulent” because the plane is going through a disordered flow, full of large vortices that slightly affect flight stability.

But, Did you know that the plane generates a large amount of turbulence in its path? Reducing this turbulence has been key to reducing energy expenditure since the time of the Wright brothers' first flight.. Turbulence is not limited to the skies: from the flow of rivers and oceans to the flight of a butterfly, even in the simple act of stirring the coffee with a spoon, we are creating turbulence. This physical phenomenon, which has been studied for more than 150 years, remains an enigma. In this talk, We will explore from the origins of turbulence and its relationship with chaos to the butterfly theorem.
