Cinema books: Beltenebros

He 17 of May, The Filmoteca welcomes the presentation of a critical study published by Edicions Contrabando on Beltenebros (1991), one of the best films directed by Pilar Miró, which will be projected below. The session will be attended by the author of the book, the film critic and historian Antonio Santamarina, who will be accompanied by Gerardo León, film critic, i José Antonio Hurtado, critic and historian. Beltenebros combines genre cinema (film noir) with the political film, set in the dark areas of the Franco regime, and a love story loaded with strong eroticism and starring two international stars, Terence Stamp i Patsy Kensit. Starting from the original novel by Antonio Muñoz Molina, Santamarina analyzes in great detail the elements that shape the film as a whole, among them the film's own resources noir: a disturbing and almost ghostly atmosphere, characters marked by disenchantment and frustration in the face of a complex and suffocating reality, the use of chiaroscuro in decadent lighting and settings. Besides, the study highlights the influence of Borges in the work, constructed as a narrative labyrinth with time jumps, games of reflexes and the presence of the theme of duality.
