Domestic Botany / New Herbarium

Domestic Botany / New Herbarium is an exhibition that uses the herbarium tradition as a starting point to rethink treatments, the transmission of knowledge and the relationship between people, especially women, i nature. the project, of the Mitochondria, duo formed by the artist María Ángeles Vila Tortosa and the choreographer Alicia Herrero Simón, it can be visited in the Open Room and the cloister of La Nau until 22 of November. The exhibition takes as reference theNew Herbarium de Castore Durante, a 16th-century botanical and medicinal treatise preserved in the University Historical Library. The work brings together representations of plants and knowledge about their properties and uses. From this reference, The Mitochondria transfer the logic of the herbarium to the present to explore how knowledge about plants has been preserved and transmitted, especially those linked to women and care practices. In the works of María Ángeles Vila Tortosa, plants cease to be solely objects of representation to become carriers of experiences, records, therapeutic properties and stories passed down between generations. The project thus raises a look at a heritage of knowledge that has been developed in the domestic sphere and that has traditionally remained on the sidelines of official accounts of knowledge.
