Within the framework of the program Of all pscreams were heard, IVAM and Taller Placer continue to activate research spaces, creation and participation around the upcoming solar eclipse in August 2026. The project explores through artistic practice how natural phenomena generate echoes in the social, in the bodies and in the shared imagination.
En is context sign up Artifacts for looking at the sun, a workshop that proposes to reflect on the act of looking at an eclipse and on how the light – in this case that of the sun- can be transformed into experience, knowledge and emotion. Looking directly at the sun is not part of our daily practice: our eyes are not ready for this and doing so can be dangerous. Throughout history, eclipses have been surrounded by stories, fears and superstitions: in some traditions it was said that an animal devoured the sun, in others that the sky announced a dark omen and that is why people fled and protected themselves during its course. Among the Dogon of Mali, for example, the sun and stars were believed to hold knowledge that is not for everyone and that looking directly at it could cause us to go blind; a sign of having seen too much. They understood this light as a boundary between the human and the divine that should not be crossed so that everything remains in the proper balance. However, the sun - star on which all life on Earth depends - awakens in everyone from childhood the desire to look directly at it and find out how long we can sustain that encounter.
Artifacts for looking at the sun is a five-day workshop held in collaboration with the artist Reyes Pe, in which we will look for ways to inhabit this liminal space. Starting from the well-known eclipse glasses, we will explore the relationship between sculpture, prosthesis and body building glasses, helmets and other devices that allow us to observe the sun both directly and through reflections. The idea is that, when we put them on, these artifacts, they stop being simple accessories and become part of our anatomy, transforming us into mutant bodies capable of relating to the sun from other physicalities. A workshop that invites you to think, from the body and collective creation, our place in the earthly and heavenly worlds.
