5 May 2026: “JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF INFAMY” BY MIGUEL ÁNGEL SOSA MACHÍN
Journey to the center of infamy (2006) by Miguel Ángel Sosa Machín is a novel that explores the repression of homosexual people during the Franco dictatorship and their discrimination based on their economic power. The work is based on real testimonies of those who were interned in the Tefía Agricultural Penitentiary Colony in Fuerteventura., applying the Law of Vagrants and Criminals. The novel revolves around three ways of narrating.: the letters, the internal monologue and narration. Through these narrative resources, The author recreates the life of homosexuals imprisoned in the Tefía concentration camp, a place of punishment and reeducation. The writer was inspired by the stories of survivors such as Juan Curbelo and Octavio García to build his narrative., which gives it a strong testimonial component. Through the experiences of the characters, the work illustrates the cruelty of the regime, the injustice of the laws and the suffering of those who were persecuted for their sexual orientation. History not only denounces repression, but also recovers the memory of the victims forgotten by official history.
