In Torquemada, Benito Pérez Galdós makes us think hard about the obscure businesses that only exploit the weak, in an ironic and mocking tone. Europe is living through turbulent times at a political and social level, money and fortune are the new Gods of a world that is turning upside down. The usurers, the money changers and bankers are winning and Galdós needs to count on it with a luxury actor, Pedro Casablanc. In the 21st century, after a pandemic that has upset us —not only in our routine—, and due to the great global crisis that has hit us, there is no better time than now to appreciate the work of Galdós, a master of sarcasm and tragedy.
