New edition of this film program to illuminate the Valencian nights of this summer that we already have upon us. The cycle Movie Nights, organized by the Cinema Classroom of the University of Valencia, has as its title Sea, Sex & Sun and houses seven titles that, from different perspectives, genders and latitudes, They take the summer season as the background of the story. The cycle starts with Shark [9], Steven Spielberg's classic, movie that instilled in us the fear of the deep sea. with this title, Spielberg's career was already established as the absolute king of commercial cinema that, starting from the classic model, would mark not only the shapes, but a mode of consumption that is projected to this day. It follows Sundown [10], film with which Mexican director Michel Franco would make the leap into international production after the success of his previous work, New order. Here an enigmatic Tim Roth represents the father of a wealthy family who spends their vacations at a resort in Mexico. A dramatic event forces the family to interrupt the vacation and return home. everyone will return, except the father himself, what, unexpectedly, decides to abandon them.
From the French Éric Rohmer we will enjoy summer tale [11], one of the pieces of what is known as the tetralogy of the four seasons. capital element of the movement New wave french, Rohmer offers us this beautiful story that transports us, then like today, to those summers of youth where time freezes and existence makes sense between walks on the beach with an ice cream in hand and a dull conversation about the meaning of life. Next to the Rohmer tape, Nits de cinema proposes that we visit one of his heirs, François Ozon that in Summer of 85 [12] transports us to the same summer moment, but a decade before. The film places us in a small town on the coast of Normandy., where a boy from 16 years old he falls in love with another boy somewhat older than him. The film has been compared to Call me by your name by Luca Guadagnino, but French style. Do not get wrong, this is better.
Con The long hot summer [13] by Martin Ritt we enter the field of classics. If anyone wants to know what it's like to sweat on a screen, this is the movie. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward give us one of those love stories that will melt the audience. They are accompanied by Orson Wells, Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury y Richard Anderson, among others. One of those classics that used to be seen on TV, but big. And the penultimate proposal of this cycle is also well loaded with torrid and suffocating summers.. Con Do what you must [14], Spike Lee showed us for the first time the conflicts of violence and racism in the black suburbs of New York. A funny comedy, but with a very dramatic social background that harshly portrays that society of the eighties, long before gentrification. Nits de cinema closes this cycle with blinded by the sun [15], of the aforementioned Luca Guadagnino, remake the The swimming pool (1969) by Jacques Deray, that takes us into a torrid game of crossed loves encapsulated in the world of rock music. Ralph Fiennes in the cast, Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts and the great Tilda Swinton.
Besides, and as a final touch, we can see, the last day of sessions, Dr. Caligari's office [17] the Robert Vienna, reference of German expressionism from the twenties of the last century with which the Aula de Cinema inaugurates a cycle that will continue in its regular programming entitled Silent and live dedicated to the great works of silent cinema.
