Of Flesh and Breath: The Pinnacle of Diminution Era
In the musical turmoil of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, there was a profound change: the instruments began to emerge from the shadow of the human voice. Once tied to colla parte style vocal lines, the instruments gradually acquired their own expressive syntax, flourishing through the art of diminution, counterpoint and virtuoso idioms. This two-part concert series traces that journey: from the intimate interweaving of vocal melodies and instrumental lines, until the moment when instrumental music found its own voice in fantasies and sonatas. A common thread in both concerts is the chanson “Susanne un jour”, originally composed by Guillaume Guéroult and Orlando di Lasso, and later transformed into a favorite basis for elaborate instrumental diminutions. In this iconic piece, we witness the metamorphosis of vocal polyphony into instrumental rhetoric. Echoing the year 1626, which also marks the beginning of the European presence in northern Taiwan (Formosa) through the Fort San Salvador of the Spanish, These concerts reflect on cultural intersections, Musical frontiers and the birth of instrumental independence in Europe at the beginning of the 17th century.
