Transcodes. Maria Aranguren

An unprecedented sample of artist María Aranguren (Valencia, 1961). The project is entitled “Transcodigos” and will be located in the main gallery room.

María Aranguren (1961) has explored for decades the possibilities of different industrial plastic materials. His most recent work, focuses on the concept of “CODE”, conceived as a system of signs capable of being combined in multiple ways, generating both images and visual poetry. For Arangur, art does not reside solely in the transmission of a message, but in the way in which said message is constructed; It is in that inseparable fusion of form and content where the work transcends ordinary communication and becomes an aesthetic experience..

The prefix trans —“on the other side”, through, beyond”—acts as a conceptual key in his work. In this context, The cellular polycarbonate grid used as a support is not a mere material: becomes a visual pentagram, where the colors, the transparencies and shapes vibrate like notes of a score converted into an image.

In the pieces presented at the Open Valencia 2025, Aranguren transforms an industrial material - traditionally used in construction and advertising due to its lightness, resistance and insulating capacity—in a poetic support, loaded with multiple meanings. What was once a functional resource becomes a space where opposites coexist: structure and meaning, background and figure, the pictorial and the sculptural, the superficial and the deep, in a constant dialogue that invites the viewer to read, feel and go through the work beyond the visible.
