Berlioz is one of Sir Mark Elder's favorite composers.. His versions of Benvenuto Cellini, Romeo and Juliet, Cleopâtre, the Requiem or the Fantastic Symphony have received critical praise. for this concert, the British master has chosen L’Enfance du Christ, a sacred trilogy by the illustrious French composer on the biblical episodes of Herod's Dream, The Flight into Egypt and The Arrival in Sais. Fascinating work of beauty, requires for its interpretation the musical sensitivity and impeccable technique that distinguish Elder's work., placed at the service of Berlioz's refined orchestration and the moving choruses and solo arias. We will hear these in the voices of mezzo Katie Lindsey as Virgin Mary, a regular guest at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan , Salzburg, Vienna or La Scala (with his recent Rosenkavalier), and bass-baritones Gordon Bintner and William Thomas, next to the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana.
