In this gem of French drama from the 17th century, Isaac de Benserade rewrites the Ovidian fable of Ifis and Iante to turn it into a modern and absolutely innovative piece in which we find the first lesbian main character in French theater. With a successful adaptation of the classic myth, the author presents us with the relationship of two women who fall in love, they get married and get to consummate the marriage with the apparent blessing of their parents. The author challenges, so, the norms of its time with this transgressive and prejudice-free work that explores such current issues as gender identity and female homosexuality, i shows, also, that the rigidity iron of social conventions can be bent from time to time.
