Nuñoz Degrain. The landscape of dreams

Muñoz Degraín is considered one of the most unique and original creators of his time., connected with the most innovative aesthetic approaches, and precursor of artistic modernity in Spain. He belongs to the large generation of artists of the late 19th century who gave Valencian painting of this time the title of Silver Age of the arts.. His constant search for new and original aesthetic formulations reflects a painter of great restlessness., Constantly interested in exploration and experimentation.

The exhibition can be visited until next 13 October and presents a set of fifty-two works from three institutions that, with your generosity, have made this project possible: the Museum of Malaga, who has donated twelve paintings from his collection; the National Library of Spain, with the loan of six of the twenty canvases on Don Quixote donated to the institution in 1920 by Muñoz Degraín to decorate the newly created Cervantes Room; and the National Prado Museum, who has lent four paintings. They are joined by the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, from which the bulk of the exhibition comes, with thirty works from his pictorial collection. We must not forget that Muñoz Degraín himself nourished the collection of the Valencian museum with one of the most generous donations ever made and, in 1913, formalized the gift of almost sixty paintings, plus a large number of objects from his studio.

Antonio Muñoz Degrain, in its constant search for new and original aesthetic formulations, went further and his experimentation with light, with its absence or its lunar nuance, shows interest in applying the study of atmospheric phenomena to landscape painting, in which the reflections of the water, the rain, fog or cloudy skies acquire high expressiveness.
