The loss of identity. Syncretic art in Cuba and Brazil

The MuVIM shows until next 15 September different forms of representation of syncretic art in Cuba and Brazil with an exhibition composed of a selection of works by Valencian artists such as José Morea or Uiso Alemany, as well as jewelry by Angela Okinaka, paintings by Mederos and sculptures by José Adário and Mendive. The Jerónima Galés Room thus delves into cultural syncretism with the exhibition 'La pèrdua d'identitat'. Syncretic art in Cuba and Brazil' curated by Amador Griño, head of museum exhibitions. The sample, It was inaugurated yesterday by the deputy of Culture of the provincial corporation, Paco Teruel, accompanied by the museum director, Rafa Company, and by the curator and head of exhibitions of the MuVIM.

A system of symbols and artistic forms of deceiving the constituted power in order to believe, to promote community worship and rituals generated by African slaves in the American territories. Definitely, a way of having hope that generated a whole complex and dark artistic imagery for the layman, but clear for believers. In Cuba, the Orixás or main gods, They mostly hid behind Catholic images. In Brazil, to avoid rebellions due to the sale and dispersion of ethnic groups and families, On Sundays they were allowed to meet to dance and sing in their batuques, which were religious celebrations of various African rites, such as Candomblé, Voodoo, Umbanda, Santeria and Palo Monte. In this small expository example, the vision of the believers themselves is contrasted with the interpretation that other cultural visions have made of these symbols and images.. The works of Mederos, Adenor Gondim o Mendive, believing artists from Cuba and Brazil, are complemented by that of the Valencian painters Uiso Alemán and Morea, o la de Angela Mie Okinaka, Japanese-Brazilian jewelry designer who has worked in direct contact with these rites and their artistic creations. Examples to understand religious syncretism, that is to say, this concealment or transmutation of a symbol belonging to a cult hidden in another.
