After screening his last film, a simple accident, at the Summer Film Library, we dedicate a cycle to the Iranian Jafar Panahi. He is undoubtedly one of the great creators of today's cinema, awarded in almost all renowned international festivals, but forced to make films in terrible circumstances.
Of 2009, to participate in protests against the government and, according to official spokesmen, for "making films against the regime", is subject to constant government persecution, materialized in prison stays, house arrests, withdrawn from the passport, bans on leaving the country and bans on taking a camera and filming. The cycle of eight films that we are now presenting brings together titles from the stage before the persecution, that is to say, The white balloon, The mirror, The circle, Crimson Gold i Offside, where the filmmaker's vision is clear: show "humanitarian events interpreted in a poetic and artistic way", In his own words. The three remaining films, This is not a movie, Taxi in Tehran i Bears don't exist, filmed clandestinely, they show Panahi's great ability to turn individual and collective limitations into expressive resources, making relevant cinema not only for what it says, but because of how he says it. An admirable example of resistance and artistic consistency.
