Integral Yasujiro Ozu: History of a neighborhood

In the cycle dedicated to the Japanese master, this month we recover the projections of Where are the dreams of my youth? i I have been born, but…, two silent films that were canceled in November due to the tragedy caused by DANA. FromThe only son, the retrospective delves into Ozu’s soundstage, interrupted on two occasions due to the war. Between 1937 i 1939 he was called to ranks in the front of Manchuria and could not film again until 1941, when he directed Brothers and sisters of the Toda family. It would premiere the following year There was a father, one of his most popular titles, for which he felt a special predilection. After, a gap of five years. In 1943, Ozu travels to Singapore to film a documentary that never saw the light of day and stays there for two years, until the arrival of the British in 1945, that the fan presoner of war. In 1946 returns to a humiliated Japan. The cruelty of the post-war period would mark his next two films, History of a neighborhood y A chicken in the wind, of which he was not satisfied. It's hard to predict the latter, which falls into some melodramatic excess quite far from Ozu's austerity, that only a year later the most coherent and fascinating stage of his filmography would open. The turning point would be late spring, first installment of the Noriko trilogy that they complete early summer i Tales from Tokyo. Torna el guionista Kogo Noda, the actress Setsuko Hara appears, themes are reduced and repeated from film to film, interiors and objects gain more and more weight, the camera moves less and less, the rigor of the framing tends to infinity... Ozu's fullness has arrived.
