Drunk with Humor

The Consortium of Museums of the Valencian Community (CMCV) During the month of August, the Cinema d'Estiu cycle is projected, Drunk with Humor at the Carme Cultural Center in Valencia. Since Thursday 1 to Saturday 31 of August, every night at 22:00 hours, except for Mondays, the cloister of the Center del Carme will become an exceptional summer cinema with free admission. The cycle brings together 27 movies about 9 countries of the American continent (Peru, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Canada and the United States) in 5 languages (castellano, quechua, French, English and Portuguese) and in the original version with subtitles, if not in Spanish. The films of the cycle Drunk with Humor revolve around humor as a universal language, that activates laughter at the expense of human frailties and obsessions, the accidents of life, love disagreements, social injustices, impossible dreams or imbalance in the world.

The film critic, Daniel Gasco, author of this selection of films, assures that “all humans are equal, as Billy Wilder said. “We can laugh and cry together and we will end up taking more than one wrong path.”. As happens to Tomás in Only with your partner (1991) who embraces an unsustainable morning ritual as a path to success; or Virginia in Homework (1991) who submits to the relentless eye of the camera as a way to understand and free his body; or John Henderson in Mother (1996) who intends to solve his failure with women in reverse, going back to mom's house.

The cycle collects all the cultural wealth and diversity of America, leaving aside the mecca of cinema, Hollywood. “The Academy has never distinguished itself by awarding this genre”, assures Gascó. “Among all the scheduled titles, only four of them have been nominated for Oscars, with the exception of the one that Art Carney won as best lead actor in 'Harry and Tonto' (1974). Instead, most of them have circulated at major film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, Saint Sebastian, Biarritz, Deauville, Karlovy Vari a Mar de Plata".

The cycle opens on Thursday 1 of August My masterpiece (2018), an ironic comedy that focuses on the art world, uncovering all the worst: his deceptions, lies and scams. Renzo, The protagonist of this Argentine film is a lapsed painter, who spends his lowest hours with the constant complicity of his long-suffering agent, an art dealer whose friendship will never abandon. Closes the cycle on Saturday 31 of August, Shiva baby (2020), a clever comedy about Jewish models made in New York by a filmmaker from 26 years, Emma Seligman. It takes place over the course of a day and practically in one place., keeping the viewer's interest alive thanks to the tension it creates. The filmmaker connects with the generation millennial attacking an opposing generation, that of the elders, that makes no effort to understand an entire new generation that has been left without options.
