Cooperativism in the cinema: Our daily bread

During the months of November and December, on the occasion of the declaration in 2024 of Valencia as the Spanish Capital of the Social Economy, The Filmoteca programs a cycle with the aim of making the public aware of the relationship between the world of cooperatives and cinema. Two complementary lines have been taken into account when selecting the films of the cycle. The first, integrates a series of films produced under the cooperative formula or in the production of which a cooperative has intervened significantly. This is the case of Fernando Méndez-Leite's first opera, The fashionable man; from The Portentous Life of Pare Vicente, bearing the signature of the Valencian Carles Mira; from the acclaimed A place in the world, by the Argentine Adolfo Aristarain; d'The Pilgrim Factor, which marked the debut in the feature film of the tandem formed by Alberto Rodríguez and Santi Amodeo; i from The Voices of Memory, produced by the Valencian audiovisual cooperative Barret Coop.

The second line includes five other titles in which cooperativism and its social values such as mutual aid, the equity, solidarity or participatory democracy are core elements of history or the constitutive theme of the discourse, as reflected in the Arizmendiarrieta documentaries, the cooperative man i Numax presents (produced, Besides, by the workers' cooperative that stars in the film). All of them respond to the motto of the capital, "the economy with values", as you can see in those two jewels of classic Hollywood cinema that are Las usa de la ira and El pan nuestro de cada día, dels mestres John Ford i King Vidor, which tell us about aspirations for resistance and social transformation based on economic action based on the search for shared solutions to collective problems; and also in the recent Argentinian film La odisea de los Giles, a dramatic comedy about an old agricultural cooperative.
