Summer afternoon in Villa María, a country house. Manuel is finalizing the premiere of a work. The interpreters are Jorge, her boyfriend; Lorena and Rocío, her neighbors; and Empar, family friend. The function is in honor of his mother, Marta, a famous actress who lives in Madrid. Marta has come to visit with her boyfriend, Toni, who is a playwright. Marta wants me to write her a new text. The problem is that Toni hasn't written since her husband died.. The play that Manuel has put on in honor of his mother is a radical version of Chekhov's The Seagull. There is a reason behind this: her mother played Nina when she was young and it is the work she loves the most. Is a radical version of this work a tribute or a poisoned gift? Why do we do just the opposite when we want to receive love?? This work is about people who make mistakes, that they don't get what they want or, that to get it, They need to kill a seagull that was flying by just at that moment, above them, innocent.
The endurance It is not a rewrite of The Seagull. However, It is a completely Chekhovian work.. What does that mean? There is humor. There is pain. The intimate and the political. The present and its contradictions. Concern for the future. The search for a life in art. And the frustration of not having it. and love. and the desire. The seagull It is Chekhov's only work about theater. For me, theater is important. From teenager, On Fridays I went to the theater on El Progreso street in Puerto de Sagunto and hid in the dark, among the people. People who went to the theater, it seemed to me then, we shared a secret. I don't know which one but, now i know, it had to do with comfort. There it could be. Over there, I dreamed of having a life in art. Then everything that had to happen happened to be able to get here and write this work.: The endurance.
