Eduardo Urtulo. A cosmopolitan traveler

The Bancaja Foundation has presented this morning the exhibition Eduardo Urtulo. A cosmopolitan traveler, which offers a review of the artistic production of the Basque-Asturian creator for four decades, proposing a tour of its iconic pictorial and sculptural work since 1960 a 1999. The presentation included the participation of the president of the Bancaja Foundation, Rafael Alcon; The Commissioner of the Exhibition, Alicia Vallina; And the artist's son, Yoann úrculo. The exhibition, the first retrospective in Valencia of the Spanish artist referent of the pop art, is integrated by 54 PAINTING WORKS, sculptures and drawings, that travel forty years of the vital and professional trajectory of Eduardo Urtulo (Santurce, 1938 – Madrid, 2003).

The sample proposes a transit through the Legacy of Uúculo and establishes a metaphor with one of the main themes of his work: The trip as an essential element of discovery. From this premise, The exhibition reveals its aesthetic universe embodied on issues such as desire, The mystery, the pleasure, the suffering or exaltation of life, inspired by many occasions by cinema, Advertising, the magazines or reality itself. The set of works presented, some of them unpublished, It comes from the collection of your only child, Yoann úrculo, of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid and other private collections.

The imaginary of Eduardo Urtulo is revealed in an itinerary that illustrates the three main stages in which his artistic production is structured: the abstraction and expressionist language of his first works; The explosion of color and desire that they mark their pop era, starring women and eroticism; and a last stage centered on transit, The contemplation and the great trip of life with its iconic works full of hats, suitcases and umbrellas.

In the words of the curator, Alicia Vallina, "Urtulo is a savage, A bon vivant anarchic that stops worrying about the setbacks and enjoys the trip. A walker that runs light so that life escapes him and shows himself without prejudices or narrows. A cheerful dandy, Good conversational, clear and curious mind, that traveled, With their brushes and with their suitcases, Hats and umbrellas, by the magical universe of everyday, Always giving him the vision of a traveler who never makes plans in advance ”.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalog has been published with the reproduction of the works exhibited and texts prepared by Alicia Vallina, Yoann Urtulo and Rafael Trénor, Untimo friend. Within its cultural and artistic mediation program, The Bancaja Foundation offers commented visits by an expert art and cultural mediation specialist.

The exhibition can be visited from the 21 February to 8 June 2025 In the Bancaja Foundation (Tetuan Square, 23) From Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 2 p.m. and from 16:30 a 20:30 hours.
