The Filmoteca collaborates with a new cycle "Nosferatu" - organized by Donostia Kultura and the Basque Filmoteca, with the support of Tabakalera – dedicated to Billy Wilder, one of the great names of the cinema of the 20th century, author of precise scripts full of witty and biting dialogue that portrays the lights and shadows of the human condition.
In retrospect, which will be developed throughout the year, starts on saturday 17 of gener amb The twilight of the gods (1950), one of his most emblematic films, and later goes back to his work as a screenwriter in the years 30 to Germany, to his first opera as director in France - Dangerous Curves (1933)— and to his prolific work as a screenwriter, yes as EUA, for Ernest Lubitsch-sized filmmakers, Mitchell Leisen o Howard Hawks. In 1942 makes his first film in Hollywood, The oldest and the youngest (1942), that would mark the beginning of an extraordinary filmography as a director.
Like previous “Nosferatu” cycles, the retrospective is accompanied by the collective book Billy Wilder. Anatomy of a genius (Donostia Culture, 2026). It has been coordinated by Luis Alegre, which sums up Wilder's versatility and relevance:
“Billy Wilder occupies a place of honor in the imagination and sentimental education of film fans around the world. His talent and fantastic versatility allowed him to scare any label and contribute key works in very diverse genres: cinema noir (Perdition, 1944), the comedy (With skirts and crazy, 1959), the drama (twilight of the gods), the war movie (West Berlin, 1948), the romantic (Ariane, 1957), the one of intrigue (The private life of Sherlock Holmes, 1970), that of judgments (Witness for charge, 1957), that of journalists (Front page, 1974), or that kind of movies that have no gender because they are like life (The apartment, 1960). Italo Calvino argued that a classic is someone who never finishes saying what he has to say. Billy Wilder fits that definition very well: an out of the ordinary that always has some surprise in store for us”.
