Basics of Portuguese cinema: Francisca

The cycle that has presented some essential titles in the history of Portuguese cinema ends with screenings of the brand new restoration of Francisca, directed by Manoel de Oliveira and released in 1981 in the Directors' Fortnight of Cannes. "Halfway between modernity and ghostliness" -in the words of Eulàlia Iglesias-, most of the critics consider it the masterpiece of the Portuguese filmmaker and the quintessence of his cinema. The copy we present has its origin in the 4K digitization of the camera negative in 35 mm preserved by the Portuguese Cinematography.

Based on a novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís, Francisca is the portrait of an obsessive love story. The book narrates a problematic passage in the real life of the author Camilo Castelo Branco, in which his friend José Augusto embarks on a perverse conjugal game of cat and mouse with Francisca, the donut that the novel·list esteems.
