With music by Carles Prat and libretto by Carlota Gurt, Aesthetics and massacre and, probably, one of the most daring and innovative proposals in contemporary Catalan opera. It fuses an avant-garde sound with a direct emotional charge, without seeking aesthetic complacency, but rather the tension of the story, through a suffocating atmosphere. Oriol Pla's stage vision injects an overwhelming physical and theatrical vitality, that has in the movement, bodily expressiveness and an impeccable dramatic rhythm in his language. Far from being a simple vocal accompaniment, the scene stands as a visceral engine in which word, gesture and music intertwine without leaving room for immobility.
The renowned Catalan actor Oriol Pla, Awarded the Emmy Award for Best Actor on 2025 for the series Yo, addicted, debuts in operatic stage direction with Aesthetics and massacre, and does it as an exercise in listening and balance, with the honest will to break conventions and tear the genre apart from within. This chamber opera was the most successful proposal of the Oh project!pear of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, a program aimed at promoting contemporary creation and supporting initiatives by young musicians and artists. A new version is presented at Les Arts compared to the one that could be seen in Barcelona.
On the stage, two singers with an upward trajectory, the soprano Maria Patak and the baritone Carlos Varela, they will be accompanied by a small instrumental line-up consisting of piano, clarinet, violin and percussion, under the direction of the same composer of the work, Carles Prat.
