Les Arts closes its lyrical season with a flourish by making a technical display that has been quite a challenge due to having to fit in and coordinate a cast of twelve singers, numerous figuration, choir, coro, large orchestra in the pit and three different groups of musicians on stage. Wozzeck is an opera of social denunciation and psycho-medical overtones premiered by Alban Berg in 1925. It is based on the true story of a soldier told in fifteen scenes that narrate the process of destruction of the protagonist. Visually impressive and loaded with symbolism, the opera crudely portrays the authentic reality of man, their poverty, misunderstanding and exploitation suffered. Swedish baritone Peter Mattei (which debuts at Les Arts), tackles the complex role of Wozzeck for the second time after his praised performance at the Metropolitan in New York. He will have as co-stars the Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek (remembered for her Sieglinde with Plácido Domingo in Les Arts) y al tenor Christopher Ventris, protagonist of the functions of the Parsifal which Lorin Maazel directed in 2008. The complicated musical and theatrical challenge will be taken on by the maestro James Gaffigan from the pit and by the German stage director Andreas Kriegenburg. AU
