Figura clave en historia de la literatura norteamericana y universal, y exponente del realismo filosófico, Walt Whitman ha sido y es influencia de otros poetas por representar y defender valores supremos como la libertad y la democracia. Su célebre colección Leaves of grass (1855) fue toda una revolución en su época, marcada por la religión, en la que el artista no solía hablar en primera persona. En sus páginas se exaltan las maravillas de los sentidos y del mundo material y natural, sin renunciar (más bien al contrario, en comunión) a su vertiente espiritual.
