RIVER THEATER. Gregory Gea, 15
That of La Celestina is one of the three great universal myths that Spanish literature has created., with Don Quixote and Don Juan. These are the words of Eduardo Galán, the author who has been in charge of adapting the classic Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea written by Fernando de Rojas at the end of the 15th century, that we can enjoy in January with Anabel Alonso in the role of the famous pimp. The relevance of this work is unquestionable if we take into account that the name of one of its characters has become a noun in the Spanish language as a synonym for “pimp.”, the woman who facilitates a loving relationship. The argument is well known, here there is no spoiler possible: to conquer Melibea, Calisto asks Celestina for help and she, through tricks, get the crush. Calisto had promised Celestina a gold chain if she helped him surrender Melibea's will and when this happens, Calisto's servants demand their share and end up killing Celestina due to her refusal to share. Later Calisto dies while jumping over Melibea's wall to help his servant Sosia and she commits suicide before the sorrowful gaze of her father Pleberio., who ends the tragicomedy with moral and existentialist reflections. The work was written at the time with the intention of it being read by the cultured public of the time., not to be represented (would last more than four hours), So Galán has had to use scissors to reduce the characters' long interventions and adapt them to a more understandable language., although it still sounds old. The objective is to bring this classic of Spanish literature that points to love and money as engines of the world to the younger public.. S.M.
