Ingmar Bergman wrote After the test in 1980 and years later the film was shot for Swedish television, understood then as the author's testament. In this theatrical version, starring Emilio Gutiérrez Caba and directed by Juan José Afonso, we enjoy metatheatre which shows the reflections of a director at the end of his life. The illusion of a new setup is the driving force that encourages the elderly to get up every morning. The defeat of time, loneliness or heartbreak are some of the themes it deals with, and above all, love for theater. “They will have to take me out of the theater feet first”, Bergman stated at the time.
