THE BLIND SUNFLOWERS

Behold · 2017

Gianluigi Toccafondo illustrates the four stories of the laureate blind sunflowers, book by Alberto Méndez published by Anagrama in 2004 who won the National Fiction Prize posthumously. His fame grew even more after the film adaptation, four years later, by José Luis Cuerda and Rafael Azcona with a cast of big names: Maribel Verdú, Javier Cámara, Raul Arevalo, Irene Escolar… The Contempla publishing house has chosen an Italian illustrator to give life to these four linked stories about the Spanish Civil War and the gruesome post-war years. About the losers of this fratricidal fight, sad, dark and dramatic, like Toccafondo's illustrations, debtors of Goya's black paintings, in black and white with some color brushes. always gloomy, starving and desperate, sewn between phrases that make up a kind of comic of the sad recent Spanish history, yet to be unearthed.
