El sencillo principal\, Is it making you feel something\, marca el tono desde el principio\, con la banda construyendo un himno a partir del potencial de la alegría\, sumergiéndose en aguas contaminadas por la falsedad y emergiendo con una perla. \nNo hope es igual de resiliente. Las letras de McCaughan pintan una escena aplastante antes de entrar en su estribillo titular. Repite la frase nueve veces\, hace una breve pausa y transforma por completo su sentido\, rompiendo el cántico con la línea «y aquí estamos cantando». La letra es afilada: a la vez una simple observación y una profunda declaración de existencia. Las noches aplastantes y los días interminables de la canción no desaparecen por ello\, pero la voz de McCaughan encuentra cierta dulzura en haber resistido… y en seguir haciéndolo. \nParadójicamente\, la energía de Songs in the key of Yikes roza (y a veces se desborda) en la euforia\, como en Stuck in a dream\, que surge como un oasis nacido de un espejismo entre Everybody dies y Train on fire: un tema a toda velocidad\, ideal para saltar en el pogo frente al escenario. Care less es un espejo oscuro y cómico de esa energía\, un tema de garaje en el que un McCaughan de lengua afilada intenta refugiarse de la tormenta fingiendo que no está rugiendo justo fuera de su puerta. Esta estrategia no funciona. Claro que no. Es una canción en un álbum de Superchunk\, y los álbumes de Superchunk son alegatos contra el aislamiento\, fiestas lo bastante grandes como para acoger a todo el mundo. \nEste\, además de dar la bienvenida a Laura King como miembro del grupo tras dos años como su batería de gira\, incluye colaboraciones de Rosali Middleman\, Bella Quinlan y Holly Thomas de Quivers\, y la bajista de gira Betsy Wright. El álbum fue grabado por Paul Voran (The Menzingers\, Hurray for the Riff Raff) y Eli Webb\, y mezclado por Mike Montgomery (The Breeders\, Protomartyr). Juntos\, no llegan a conclusiones sobre para qué sirve el arte frente a la crisis. Pero sí hacen un gran arte.
