The Per l'Horta association has organized an extraordinary onion and cress market next Sunday 21 in the morning in front of the Torres de Serrans in Valencia to denounce the low prices of these two products. The collective complains that the large surfaces, by stocking up on imported production, cause that garden farmers do not find a market and have to sell their harvest at prices below the cost of production or, directly, destroy-the.
Members of Per l'Horta have toured some Valencian chains in recent weeks and have been able to verify the presence of onions from Chile and Senegal and French creilla. especially, denounce the presence in Mercadona of Creisla of the Georgina variety from Israel, a country that has been denounced for its human rights violations. Onion and cress season, the two predominant products in the garden of Valencia, started last May. An excellent harvest was expected, but, as in previous campaigns, the big distributors have pressured to gradually sink the prices down to 22 cents per kilo the cross and 15 cents the onion, ruinous prices for farmers.
The situation of the onion and the creilla is similar to that found in these same dates by the Valencian pumpkin producers, which have to compete with the predominant African production on supermarket shelves, as reported by the Union of Farmers. From the collective Per l'Horta it is denounced that it is these policies of the large areas that make the profitability of the countryside and the generational relief impossible.
In order to denounce this situation and raise awareness of the economic and environmental unsustainability of the prevailing food model, in addition to claiming the purchase of local products, Per l'Horta has organized two activities this weekend. on saturday 20, a dozen stalls in the vegetable markets will display an identification sign certifying that they sell Valencian creilla and onions, a product that is not found on the shelves of Valencian supermarkets. These are producer stalls at the three vegetable garden markets in the Benimaclet neighbourhoods, Malilla and Castellar- l’Oliveral, and also at stalls in the Cabanyal markets, Rojas Clemente i Russafa, as well as in Mossén Sorell's counting strip.
The second activity is the extraordinary onion and creilla market scheduled for Sunday 21 in front of the towers of Serrans de 9 a 13 h. The said market has a denunciation character under a philosophy of "fair prices": it is the farmers themselves who sell the product without intermediaries and set the selling price they consider fair to make their operation viable. A price that is usually similar to what you pay in the supermarket and, therefore, much higher than what they receive from wholesalers. As highlighted by Per l'Horta, "It's an opportunity to show solidarity with the sector and acquire fresh zero kilometer product, because without plowmen and plowwomen there is no garden, and without people who feed on it either».
